Soundtrack to my Life

Songs I like and why

I decided that if I did a proper post today it would end up instead of bloggage as being rantage, so I followed Rachel's example, and went for a bit of memige instead.  (Is that even a word??!!)

PS  Get well soon Gordon!!

The Soundtrack to my Life

20 of my Favourite Songs
(in no particular order - which is rubbish if you're
trying to compile a timeline of the life of Liz - and not a
single Barbara Streissand track in sight, Jon!)

  1. Bitch by Meredith Brooks - When I listened to this song at Uni it made wish I could be the stronger side of the lyric.  The BITCH.  It would have saved me a hell of a lot of bother at a very dark time in my life.
  2. Don't Stop me Now by QUEEN - Well, come on, you just can't fault Queen, they rock in every sense of the word.  This song reminds me of The Willow, the Chinese Buffet that used to turn into a Disco afterhours.  Happy times.
  3. Body Movin' by the Beastie Boys - At Uni, we shared our hall of residence with a trainee policeman and professional drinker/drugtaker (yes, erm, a bit of a contradiction there!).  His party piece was a Carlton-dance.  It was absolutely spot on.  And he always did it to this song.
  4. A Little Less Conversation by Elvis - When I had a really hard time at Uni in third year, and had to move out of my shared house and into Halls of Residence, my neighbour (little first year) would play music so loud and bangy that even with earplugs I could hear it in my CHEST.  If Simon ever stayed over we got our own back in the morning - half past 5 am (had to get up for teaching practise) blasting out "A Little Less Conversation"!
  5. Wake Me Up Before you Go by Wham! - One of my first introductions to pop I guess, when I was a very sheltered little girl. :)  I found this in my mum's collection of tapes in Chile.  Still love it!
  6. The Entire Grease Sountrack - I was first exposed to Grease at probably about age 8, watching a taped "Royal Variety Performance" my grandma sent us from England.  Asked for it for my birthday, and I listened to it on repeat all day, and when I went to bed I couldn't sleep because of all the songs going around in my head!
  7. Aint No Sunshine When She's Gone - One of my many way-too-old-for-me-crushes played this over and over to me when he came to stay with us in England because he thought the song was awesome.  When he left I bought the Notting Hill Soundtrack and would sing along altering the lyrics to "ain't no sunshine when he's gone"  I can't believe I admitted that to be honest!!  He's engaged to be married if you're interested :)
  8. It's Raining Again by Supertramp - One of the songs my dad used to have on tape when we were in Chile.  He copied it from some mates that used to work at the YM with him.  Tom and I used to dance around to chairs to it, and other Supertramp songs! :)
  9. The Ghostbusters Theme - At my school in Chile there used to be an annual competition to elect a "Queen" of the school.  We had loads of different events, and one was to make up a choreography, kind of like Cheerleaders.  The year my yeargroup representative won (so exciting) our logo was Slimer from Ghostbusters, we handed out "green goo" that I got out of one of my craft books from England, and we did the choreography to the Ghostbusters Theme. We were awesome, it´s no wonder we won! :)
  10. The Hippopotamus Song by Flanders and Swann - My dad loved and still loves these guys and their mix of gentle humour and music.  I just think this one is the best.  It brings back memories of all five of us singing it to the church in Chile, and trying to teach them the chorus.  We were like the Vonn-Trapp family singers!  But not... Which reminds me...
  11. The Sound of Music - I performed in this in my first year at Sixth Form.  It was the first time I'd trodden the boards for real (though I'd always wanted to!!) and I was... yeah you guessed it.... a nun.  We got to sing some cool songs in latin and people said I was the most demure looking nun of the lot :)
  12. Paid My Dues by Anastacia - in reference to number 1 again.  Glad I came through that experience, and Anastacia's words are inspiring.  "Feeling sorry for yourself ain't got nobody nowhere"
  13. Mmmm Bop by Hanson - back in the days when I used to be up in my bedroom on a Sunday afternoon recording the Top 40 (trying to pause out the DJ talking - and missing, repeatedly!)  I jumped around the room when this was number one.  There are just some songs with such poppy energy they give you a spring, this is one of them.  Even if I never could understand what on earth they were going on about. :)
  14. The One and Only by Chesney Hawkes - reminds me of Grace.  There are many songs that do this, but none more than this one.  She requested it so much when we went out in York that DJ's would put it on as they saw her coming! :)  Great to sing at the top of your lungs too.
  15. Murder on the Dancefloor by Sophie Ellis-Bextor - released at a good time at Uni, my fourth year (unless my memory fails me)  I loved the proper queen's english of Ellis-Bextor.
  16. Intoxicating by David Crowder Band - I listened to this practically on repeat when I first came to Spain.  Focusing on the awesomeness of God REALLY got me through that first week.  I was on my own, with no contacts, no idea what to do or where to go for well over 3 days.  Thankfully not completely alone. :)
  17. In Christ Alone by Stuart Townend - This one brings me to my knees every time.  There have been many many moments in my life when I have needed to really get down and repent for the sin and dirt in my life, and this song without a doubt has helped me so much in those times.  I just love it.
  18. Adoration by the Newsboys - I sang this at a Christmas Service, the first time we had a service after my church was reordered (a real labor of love for my dad!).  It was too rocky for most of the people there, but the words, deeply moving... I've linked to them for you to read.  Think about them in the context of Christmas.  They are mindblowing.
  19. Stars from Les Miserables - I love the contrast between Javert's "Stars", his suicide song, about the hopelessness of life, and Valjean's juxtaposed song of the same tune, about his Salvation in Christ.  This show is awesome, I've yet to see it!  Anyone want to buy me tickets?  Ta. :)
  20. Keep on Movin by Five - I used to listen to the radio on the bus on the way to Sixth Form (40 min ride) and if this song came on it immediately perked me up.  The light poppiness of it, the lyrics and the harmonies are just so uplifting.  It still lifts me up now :)
